Tips to Help Save You Money on Vacation

Posted on

Vacation is the time when you probably spend way more than you would if you were at home. Going out to eat, doing activities throughout the day, purchasing souvenirs and other spending can all add up when you're on your vacation. If you have a budget while traveling, you may have noticed it is difficult to keep on track with your spending. See below for some tips to save you money on your next family vacation.

Take Advantage of Freebies

Talk to the concierge at your hotel about what amenities the hotel has. Things such as free breakfast and coffee can save you some money, especially if you have a lot of mouths to feed. Some hotels offer a full breakfast that includes hot meals, not just cereal or pastries. The free breakfast may only be during particular hours in the morning, not all morning long, so be sure to set your alarm so you can make it in time. Other freebies such as toiletries can also save you some cash.

Ask About Special Offers

Ask the front desk about special offers with surrounding attractions such as discounts or coupons. Some hotels may offer coupons, so be sure to check with the front desk. Take advantage of these discounts to save money.

Use the Hotel Amenities for Entertainment

You don't always have to leave the hotel for entertainment. If the hotel has a pool, take a day to lounge and relax - it's free entertainment. Some hotels may also offer family friendly activities such as movie nights or craft activities for kids. Take a day off and stay at the hotel for the day. It's a nice break for the entire family and a great way to break up a busy vacation.

Cook Meals

Rather than eating out, cook a meal in your hotel room. If you don't have a full kitchen in the room, you can still use the microwave to make a meal or two for your family. Use the mini-fridge to store a few things such as lunch meat, fruits and snacks to keep spending down on eating out. You can use the coffee pot to boil water for things such as macaroni and cheese, oatmeal, or Ramen noodles.

Vacations can get expensive, especially if you didn't budget as well as you should have. Spending can get a bit out of control on vacation, but you can keep it in check by following the tips above.
